1/8 MILE RUNS
In Hungary dragracing is mostly over 1/8 mile, mostly because of the lack of suitable tracks.
Racing is more open this way, distance lost during a bad launch are harder to recover.

VW Scirocco Bimoto (2x VR6 turbo)
(1 people)    photo 1  _2_  _3_

Tököl, 2008.04.13.

This amazing machine arrived from Slovenia. It has two VR6 engines, both turbocharged. So, in theory we have a 5.6 liter 12 cylinder turbo engine with all wheel drive. Seems like a good recipe. Unfortunately it wasn't quite finished, Bojan only used around 0.5 bar boost, still he managed to come runner-up in the King of Europe East's AWD category.
officially this run was timed 11.905 @ 196 km/h, which is matched quite closely by our log, if rollout is set to 15".
In most of his launches the front wheels span like in an FWD car, but the rear engine bogged down quite soon. It happened in this run too, that explains the strange acceleration curve. The gearshift mechanism was made cleverly, he didn't have to mess around with the stick for too long. 4th gear was not long enough, but he didn't want to shift so near the finish line, so he crossed the traps on the limiter.
Let's hope we'll see the car again with proper boost too.

Suzuki Swift 1.3 16v turbo (POS)

Tököl, 2006.07.29.

A long awaited log of one of the fastest FWD cars in Hungary. In fact this tiny engined Suzuki was the Hungarian FWD ET record holder till the day we took this log. (Now it's CCH's Honda Civic)
Thanks to its feather weight and the proper suspension setup and special tires it's mega fast.
Please note that this run was on ordinary unprepped concrete surface.
Of course big power is also needed to pull these numbers, and tripling the original GTI's power output is no mean feat. (from 100 HP to around 300 HP at the flywheel)
btw. this run here was a new personal best of POS, the driver of this Swift.
We also took on board video footage of this run, which will be included in the race report video, coming soon.

VW Golf I TDI (Maki)

Kiskunlacháza, 2007.09.09.

The fastest Hungarian diesel powered car.
1.9 liter TDI engine, smokes badly and goes like stink. While there was a strong tailwind during the run, there's no denying that it's very powerful.
Of course being very light also help, only 720 kg with driver. Traction is helped by the Pirelli slicks and the strong LSD. Over 0.7g until 100 km/h is no small feat!
His best during the day was 11.7x according to the official timing, this run was a bit slower, 11.87 @ 196 km/h (122mph)
After setting the rollout to 10", our log matches the official figures quite well once again.

Kiskunlacháza, 2011.09.24.

This is Thomas73's car, what was the champion of AS3 category in 2010, and AS7 in 2011. Nice start, fast shifts, and high power. The car has perfect "turbo engine" power graph, what we can see on the image. It hold the whole power on high rpm too. This run was 11,961@194,96. If you put the roll out to 30 cm, you can see same time. His personal best time is: 11,88@197,5

Engine:
- 1.8 16V Turbo
- stock gearshifter, block and head
- E85
- 1.3 Bar turbo boost

Tyres:
- Toyo R888

Tököl, 2008.04.20.

They just about finished preparing the car for the race at Tokol Airport. Well, they didn't finish it really, just stopped. :) There's a lot to improve, but the initial signs are promising.
First, there is the launch. Beside the Chevy Nova and the Jeep this package is the best launching front engine, rear wheel drive combo that I have logged so far. Everything is perfect until 70 km/h. Then comes the first gearshift, which takes around a whole second. The old gearbox doesn't do its job very well.
In 2nd it takes another second to build real boost. Peak power is nice, but it available in a very small rev range, as the engine cannot be revved beyond 7000 yet. The real power comes on in 3rd gear, which is just about long enough to cross the finish line.
This was his best run of the day at 11.948 @ 201 km/h. In the finals he broke the diff. I'm sure it well get much better next time.

Opel Astra 3.0 V6 (Xawery)
(1 people)    photo 1  _2_  _3_

Tököl, 2006.10.22.

Xawery Mielcarek came from Poland to race at Tököl with his 3 liter 24v Opel Astra.
In Hungary highly tuned naturally aspirated engined cars are very rare in drag racing. In fact apart from a few fast Hondas I can't think of any...
He had no problem winning his category even against 2 liter turbo 2WDs and 3.8 liter M power E30's.
In fact it's the fastest n/a engined car we have ever logged! And it's an FWD!
Even with the most conservative flywheel-HP estimate he found more than 100 HP in the originally 210 HP engine. Worth checking the engine bay photos.

And it's not just an engine, the car also has trick Quaiffe diff and a custom ratio gearbox. First gear is quite tall, but subsequent gears are short.
Very much like a track car. ;)

The only problem which is evident from the log is the launch. Perhaps it was intentional to save the drivetrain, but Xawery didn't floored the loud pedal before he reached 20 km/h. From then on it's a very clean run: excellent traction, fast upshifts.

This run was officially timed 11.8, so it was less than a tenth slower than his best ever run, which followed right after this. (11.77)

We also recorded an onboard video, which will be included in the forthcoming summary video of the event.

2006.07.08.

I could say a lot of nice words about this run, but actually it's quite hard to find the right words. Just as hard as to breathe during acceleration. I know, I tried!
This now became the fastest FWD car listed on timeslip.hu and it's quite a feat considering the two what was faster over the 1/8 mile where running on drag slicks on the prepped surface of Santa Pod Raceway, England.
The trap speeds are fenomenal...
