| 3 liter, turbocharged, as promised! :) Hehe. This is VW's record MPG returning car. The name "3L" comes from fuel consumption over 100 km. This equals to 94 MPG. (78 US MPG) And it's not just a claim, the owner told me during his Budapest-Rome-Budapest trip he was matching the quote from VW. Check the datasheet here. Of course at wide open throttle (eh, sorry, I know it's a Diesel, but you get the idea) consumption goes up a bit. During a short dynamic test drive and the acceleration tests it has gone up to 5 liter / 100 km. (56 UK, 47 US MPG) That's still a very good figure. So it doesn't drink a lot of diesel, but it doesn't have much go either. :) And to top it all, it has a special gearbox as well. It's an automatic, but not the "accelerate even during gearchanges" type, but one which fits much more to the "I'm slow as a snail, but I return good MPG" slogan of the car. :) ps: Do you know the true story why VW come up with this car? Well, industrial spies told the VW board that Renault was busy working on a 3 liter small car. Of course they had to match them, so they built this Lupo. Renault meanwhile released the Clio V6, a small car with a 3liter displacement engine returning maybe 25 mpg on a good day. :) | As it's an unmolested example, this get away is quite good. Unfortunately the ECU was playing up -some problems with overboost- so in this run the driver short-shifted to prevent ignition cut. |
