1/8 MILE RUNS
In Hungary dragracing is mostly over 1/8 mile, mostly because of the lack of suitable tracks.
Racing is more open this way, distance lost during a bad launch are harder to recover.

Kiskunlacháza, 2006.08.20.

All wheel drive, paddle clutch, lowish power, and the big weight caused this bog-down start.
The peak acceleration is nice and high, but only lasts for a few tenths.
Apart from this, there is also a problem with the engine's characteristics, it looses power continously after each gearchange.

2008.10.19.

Originally this car has a 130HP Honda D16 engine, but now it's turbocharged with 7psi boost.
Not a bad start for street tires, but the small puddle in the middle of first gear g curve could have been avoided if the driver did not feather the loud pedal.
Power is nice, and its characteristic is ok.

2005.03.16.

We couldn't log a good launch, this one is the first, the most ordinary automatic start was the best of the three tries. Basically it was right leg off the brake pedal, moved over the loud pedal, then flooring it, and the automatic did it's job. He lost quite a bit of time because of the bad launch. We will log the car again soon.

2006.07.06.

One of the fastest diesels we have logged. Sporting a real Torsen quattro powertrain and it doesn't even smoke. A big plus. But the launch was quite off from what could have been possible, it bogged down in both attempts we logged.
Well, it will only get better. :)

2005.09.25.

This car has the engine and transmission from the red coupe. It's uglier and -because of an unknonw problem- is less powerful. But it is lighter, and the driver's skill helped him to eliminate two faster cars in the way to win the catogory on the same day as we took the this log.

2008.10.24.

It's not a real T16, it's a GTI with the 2 liter 16v T16 engine from a 405 T16. The engine is stock, and even has the original GTI exhaust on, which is obviously a bottleneck. Traction is quite good on standard street tires, too bad it takes too long to reach the peak G levels. In this run the driver lifted off just 15 meters before the finish line, significantly harming the trap speed. In another run, while running worse ET it reached almost 171 km/h.

Rábaring, 2007.09.29.


While I was filming the racing at the Rabaring, this Golf made me wonder how could he reach so high trap speed with a relatively weak ET.
Well, now I know why.
The start is lousy, the driver took it very easy probably to limit tire spin. It's obvious it would have done a much better 60' had he let the clutch out more rapidly. Second gear wasn't held long enough, he shifted into turbo lag. But once it came on boost, it pulled quite well, in fact between 100 and 140 km/h the acceleration curve is level.
In 4th gear it could still increase the power output, and by look of it, perhaps it would be even more in 5th. Well, but the 1/4 mile is too short for it. ;)
